A disabled Hyundai in the left lane of the Exit 8 on-ramp was struck by a Lexus, whose driver was from Avon, traveling in the left, westbound lane around 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 12, Connecticut State Police said. Some of the Hyundai's occupants had exited the vehicle, police said.
After being struck by the Lexus, the Hyundai spun out into the path of the Freightliner. Those killed included Ronald Omar Tello, 27, of Danbury, the pedestrian who had gotten out of the Hyundai, and an unrestrained passenger of the Hyundai, Carlos Molina Jimenez, who would have turned 27 on Monday, Jan. 13, police said. The driver of the Hyundai sustained minor injuries. No other injuries were reported.
Police said that the Lexus had government employee insurance and was operated by Viswanathan Ganapathy. The Freightliner was driven by a Davenport, Florida man, and a Queens, NY woman had been in the sleeper section of the cab, police said.
The crash remains under investigation.
